Science Faculty
The Science Faculty at Galashiels Academy comprises the departments of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Across all stages, we aim to develop curiosity, critical thinking and a strong understanding of the scientific world.
Broad General Education (S1–S3)
S1
All pupils receive three periods of Science per week. The course provides a broad introduction to key scientific concepts, including:
- Introducing Science
- Chemical Reactions
- Materials
- Biological Systems
- Environmental Biology
- Forces and Space
- Energy
S2
Pupils continue building on their learning from S1 and developing greater depth across the same key areas:
- Chemical Reactions
- Materials
- Biological Systems
- Environmental Biology
- Forces and Space
- Energy
S3
In S3, pupils choose at least one Science subject. Each subject is allocated two periods per week.
- Biology: Cell Biology, Multicellular Organisms, Life on Earth
- Chemistry: Chemical Changes and Structure, Nature’s Chemistry, Chemistry in Society
- Physics: Dynamics, Space, Waves and Energy
- Environmental Science: Dynamics, Space, Waves and Energy
Senior Phase (S4–S6)
In the Senior Phase, pupils can specialise further and study the following courses:
- National 4: Environmental Science
- National 5: Biology, Chemistry and Physics
- Higher: Biology, Chemistry and Physics
- Advanced Higher: Biology, Chemistry and Physics
