Academy Trump Argentines
By Alistair Crooks
A new challenge faced the Gala Academy Senior XV last Saturday, 10 September, as they came up against touring overseas opposition - Bede’s Grammar School, of Argentina.
The boys put in a resolute performance to comfortably beat their South American counterparts 36-12, extending their winning form following their win in the Scottish Schools Cup last week.
Victory didn’t come without an early setback however, and following a sloppy try conceded in the opening minutes of the game it took a great spirit from the home side to wear down the opposition defence and build a lead going into half-time through tries from Steven Patterson and Joris Caldow (x2).
A much-improved second half saw an emboldened Academy outfit that moved the ball quicker through the backs line and one that gained real confidence in the latter stages. Tries from Robbie Irvine, Greg Faris and Kyle Scott as well as 3 conversions from Struan Mitchell saw the team coast home to secure the win.
A good display all round that featured some slick rugby at times, the boys will look forward to carrying this momentum into their next cup game on Tuesday 20 September.
