On a wet and wild Thursday afternoon, 29 October, Galashiels Academy’s senior team put in a fine display to beat opponents Strathaven Academy 23-7 despite difficult conditions.
The back pitches of the school were the venue for the victory and the home crowd played their part, spurring the team on to victory from the sidelines.
The damp and muddy pitch resulted in a sluggish first half which ended with the only points coming through Struan Mitchell’s penalty kick. Gala led 3-0 at the break.
After the restart their Strathaven counterparts tested the Gala defence as they pressed to seek an advantage but it was the home team who scored the first try of the match. John Turnbull’s chip into the corner was successfully converted by Steven Patterson after a mistake from the Strathaven full-back, the Gala centre slamming the ball down over the line.
From this point the Academy seniors were allowed to express themselves and despite a try under the posts for the away team, the home side never looked in trouble as they scored twice more through Aidan Turner – a quick turnover in one corner before Gala switched the play and scored in the opposite - and Robbie Irvine – a powerful drive over the line from the forward pack. Struan Mitchell converted once.
The senior side have now progressed to the next round of the Plate competition and can look forward to the announcement of their next fixture. Well done boys.
